All Around The Joint

We have 360 joints in the human body.

Do you ever wonder why we have so many joints in our body? Well I do.

I want to talk about our joints and why they’re so important, ESPECIALLY as we age, and how imperative it is to keep them healthy and be very mindful of our movements.

Consider this; I know it sounds really morbid, but the older we get the more we dry out. Our skin dries out, our bones can become brittle, and this includes our joints. In order to continue to move, we must continue to move. We have so many joints in our bodies because we are made to move.

As use-it-or-lose-it organisms, we get the body we practice having.

In other words, the more we move, the more we CAN move, and the less we move the less we can move.

Did you know that your mobile joints are surrounded with something called synovial fluid?

Your body has so many joints because it was made for movement. Your joints are formed by one bone that articulates with another bone. You have snynovial joints that are most associated with movement and are comprised of 80% of your body.

Synovial joints are loosely held together by a joint capsule and ligaments. They are unique because they produce what is called synovial fluid. This fluid resembles egg whites and works like engine oil in keeping your joints lubricated for continued motion. This fluid is essential for lubrication of the joint surfaces to reduce excessive wear and to nourish the cartilage cells that line the joint.

Joints such as your knees, vertebrae, elbow, bones in your hands, hips…. Are all synovial joints.

Let’s first talk knees

If you have bad knees, should you give up altogether with working out?

This will sound like an oxymoron to some, but if you suffer from bad knees, it’s almost imperative that you and what stay active AND work out.

We will also address some of the things that may be going on with you to cause you pain in your knees in the first place.

I never really had issues with my knees until I did. Honestly, I never gave it a second thought until I started experiencing some sort of pain in them.
